Methven is located in the Canterbury region of New Zealand’s south Island and is hands down the perfect escape no matter your taste or budget. Nestled right underneath Mt Hutt, it is undoubtedly the closest place to stay, to hit the slopes early.
In winter, it is the location of choice for snow enthusiasts who are visiting Mt Hutt to Ski or Snowboard. At all other times of the year Methven attracts all lovers of the outdoors who visit to take advantage of the large range of outdoor activities. With Mt Hutt on its door step and some of the World’s finest Heliskiing country, Methven is a snowsports magnet. Methven is the gateway to Mt Hutt, located only 1 hour from Christchurch airport.
Methven is more likely to be visited by experienced riders and those who are there to ride and only to ride. Experienced riders choose to come to this area over others to experience the large area of Heli country Mt Hutt has to offer. Heliskiing or boarding is an experience unlike any other.
Sports and nature
Outside of snowsports, Methven is a busy hub for activities from Archery to Skydiving! Enjoy a beautiful Hot Air Balloon ride, go for an Ice Skate, or jump on a Horse and take in the views.In Methven there really is something for everyone!
Nightlife
Considering it’s a small town, there is a reasonable variety of Methven restaurants and bars to choose from. Most restaurants and bars are located in the heart of Methven, but there are also some situated within accommodation establishments in the back streets of town. Methven stands on the high plains at a point where six roads converge. Between 1871 and 1976 it was the terminus of a branch railway from Rakaia. Like other rural service towns in the region, Methven declined during the 20th century, but the opening of the Mt Hutt ski field has slowed the downturn.
