Ski Japan, Furano

If you have wanted to ski Japan, Furano is situated in Hokkaido’s beautiful Daisetsu-zan National Park. Furano boasts one of Japan’s largest verticals with 974 metres of terrain. The skiing is spectacular, with virtually every run giving you great views of the peak of Mt Furano and the summits of Hokkaido’s highest mountains. On the slopes, Furano offers attractions for every level of skier, expert runs, long fast runs and wide, easy cruising runs for beginners. Furano regularly holds World Cup events with the men’s downhill being the mountain’s specialty. Furano ski resort offers much more than just good skiing. The town’s culture alone is enough to attract travellers wishing to experience the authentic northern Japanese lifestyle.

Furano ski resort offers much more than just good skiing. The town’s culture alone is enough to attract travellers wishing to experience the authentic northern Japanese lifestyle.
You will discover traditional concerts in the township, weekly concerts at the New Prince Hotel, and firework displays on special occasions such as New Year’s Eve.
Each year the whole town comes alive as Furano ski resort hosts their Winter Festival. The ski area becomes a sea of activity with competitions, events, concerts, and food and drinks stalls selling Furano’s delicious local products. The festival takes place over the first weekend of February.

Furano is a spectacular place to base yourself for the most adventurous snow holiday. Hire a guide for a few days and adventure out to the likes of, Asahidake the backcountry powder mecca or discover the tranquility of Tomamu or Sohoro.

Sports and nature

Sports and natureThere are so many things to do in and around Furano. For ideas on activities, go to the Furano Tourism Association which is located downstairs at the Kitanomine gondola building. It’s an amazing source of information and a few of the staff speak fluent English.

The other option is the Furano Biei Tourism Centre near the station. Many of the hotels and accommodation will also provide you with a tourism pack, maps, and further information. Day Trips to Other Ski Areas.
Hokkaido gets micro storms where it may dump in one valley but not in another, so if the powder at Furano isn’t to your liking, check out the weather conditions at the nearby ski areas.

Furano Snow Tours do a great job of organising day trips out of the resort.

Backcountry Skiing
Similarly, Furano snow tours also provide guided backcountry skiing excursions to nearby areas.
The Tokachidake area has three main areas for backcountry skiing with Mt Tokachi, Furano-dake, and the Three Step Mountain. If you like to earn your turns, this area offers Remarkable (note the capital R!) backcountry skiing and boarding! The reddy-brown outdoor onsen at the Ryounkaku ryokan at Tokachidake is also pretty legendary and offers some spectacular views.
A good spot for inclement weather days is the Take Noro Yama backcountry area near Minami Furano. This goes up to approximately 1,200 metres in the sub-alpine and offers a vertical drop of about 700 metres. Some parts are reasonably mellow whilst there are also some steep treed pitches in the mid-section of the hill.
Asahidake on the volcano is another popular Furano back-country skiing destination.

Cross Country Skiing
There is a little bit of cross country skiing at Furano on groomed tracks about 5 minutes from the resort.

Adventure Activities
Furano Snowmobiling is a popular Furano activity. There are about four different companies that offer snowmobiling, with variability in the length of the trail ride, the power of the snowmobiles, and of course the cost.

Other options for a bit of excitement include banana riding, snow rafting, tubing, tree climbing (!!), snowshoe trekking, horse riding, hot air ballooning, and parasailing behind a snowmobile if you really want to freeze your butt off.

Leisure Activities
Or to really freeze your bits, you can try ice hole fishing.

Other leisure options include a visit to the cheese factory or wine tasting at the winery which has surprisingly good wine.
Wandering around the quaint town of Furano is also enjoyable. The Asahiyama Zoo near Asahikawa is an interesting visit, where you can see super cute penguins, seals, and polar bears. There are convenient shuttle buses to get there.

For indoor activities, there are various touristy cultural activities such as Japanese tea ceremonies and dressing up in a kimono.

Onsen
For complete relaxation, you should partake in the Japanese tradition of an onsen. A few of the Furano hotels and pensions have onsen. Otherwise, there are various onsen tours to nearby areas that can be organised through Furano Tourism. Examples include the red-brown onsen at Ryounkaku (at Tokachidake) and the nearby Fukiage Onsen, or the Hakuginsou Hot Spring Centre (40 mins one way). Alternatively, you can have an onsen at Tokachidake or Asahidake Onsen at the end of a ski day.

Nightlife

NightlifeGrab a Dining and Entertainment Guide from the tourism office and take your pick! From Sushi and other traditional Japanese to Mongolian BBQ's and a Coca-Cola tribute restaurant/museum - the selection is enormous. Some top picks have to be Restaurant Nord for a fondue, Yuiga Doxon for a great curry and the Furano Brewery Yama no Doxon, where you will receive some of the friendliest service possible whilst drinking their thirst-quenching home-brewed beers and eating their super-tasty home-made smoked sausages.

Nightlife in Furano is somewhat simple when compared to the big party resorts of Europe and North America. The town seems to entertain a more relaxed atmosphere than that of most ski resorts. Still, with over 200 restaurants and bars to choose from you'll never have to visit the same place twice. Have an apres-ski drink at the funky Ice Bar found at the Kitanomine base area or better yet, head to Bar Bocco for an enjoyable evening mixing with the locals.

Après drinks are close to non existent, unless you can make your own fun with your duty free alcohol or Chu-His from supermarket or vending machine. Furano restaurants can be a good alternative and have Japanese fare on offer including sushi, noodle bars, izakaya snacks, Mongolian BBQs and curries. You’ll also find a little Western style food in the form of pizza and pasta.

Culture & history

Culture & history The ski area consists of two connected peaks, each offering long fast runs that have been used for World Cup races. Furano Ski Area is within walking distance from Furano City. With a population of 26,000 friendly locals waiting to meet visitors Furano has a fantastic cultural experience to offer on top of the amazing skiing.

During winter regular cultural performances are put on by the locals and the volunteer ski hosts are waiting to meet you and take you for a ski around the mountain.
