Choose to base yourself in Ohakune, Whakapapa Village, Taupo or Turangi. All these accommodation options for Mt Ruapehu are primarily self drive. Ohakune Village is the après ski capital of the North Island with many bars and restaurants to choose from with easy access to Turoa. Whakapapa Village is quite mellow in comparison and offers some magnificent views of the National Park. Taupo is a vibrant town located on the shores of Lake Taupo with plenty of bars and restaurants. Many adventure tourism operators are based in Taupo and the town is only one hour from Mt Ruapehu. Turangi is a smaller town known for its Thermal pools and trout fishing and is 45 minutes to Whakapapa.
