Thredbo History
Thredbo has been turning skiers onto the slopes for some 55 years, established in 1956 by Czechoslovakian’s with a dream for a world class ski resort in the southern hemisphere. In the early days there was only the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, Candlelight Lodge and Bursil’s (now The Denman) accommodation options. Thredbo has since grown to host over 4000 people per night in the village with a lifting capacity of up to 18,000 people per hour on the mountain.
The Kosciuszko Mountain offers a wide range of piste for skiers and snowboarders to improve their skills on, from the gentle slopes at Friday Flat through to the adrenaline pumping steeps of Funnel Web. Lessons are conducted all over the mountain and for the adventurous there are freestyle lessons in the terrain parks where you can improve your spins & tricks.
Skiing at Thredbo with the kids is an adventure as the children are encouraged to join the Milo Kids Club where they will build snowmen, and make snow angels from as little as 3 years and move on to skiing and snowboarding as they grow and progress through the Thredboland program onto Freeriders and into Club Freeride for children up to 18 years.
Thredbo now hosts world class events and is a year round alpine resort with activities on offer right throughout the year. The Summer offers mountains biking, rock climbing, swimming, walking, snow shoeing (snow permitting). Winter is brings the cooler temps and as snow starts to fall from May onwards the fanatics start to flow into town ready for skiing and snowboarding as the snow seasons debut in June. The winter season runs from June long weekend to the October long weekend and in recent years has been able to extend the season for October skiing and snowboarding thanks to great snow making and late season snow falls.
