Why New Zealand?
Real mountains, incredible scenery, lively ski towns, friendly locals and fast access from Australia are just a few good reasons for crossing the ditch to discover what New Zealand has to offer. If you have been to NZ to ski or board before, but not for a while, you will be surprised at the changes – new express lifts, improved base facilities, accredited childcare centres and specialised kids lessons.
Why the South Island?
If you have never been, you will be excited from the moment you glimpse the Southern Alps from the plane heading over. A right hand window seat is what you need flying into Christchurch to spot Mt Hutt, while either side works on the spectacular direct flights into Queenstown as the approach brings you in between the ranges with views of Cardrona, The Remarkables and Coronet Peak on a clear day. Off mountain the ski towns are continually expanding with a huge range in accommodation on offer from funky backpacker lodges to 5 Star plus Luxury apartments and hotels. As for Apres Ski you will be spoilt for choice with the numerous restaurants, cafes and bars on hand. If you can handle a big one on a Monday night then Queenstown is the place to head. Don’t be fooled by Wanaka or Methven’s small town charm and serenity, they both have their share of the hot spots and adrenalin pumping activities.
Why the North Island?
They call it the gift of Fire and Ice. Home to New Zealand’s two largest ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa, Mt Ruapehu boasts the highest lift access and the longest vertical drop in Australasia. Mt Ruapehu is the largest of three magnificent volcanoes that make up the Tongariro National Park. Located in the central region of the North Island makes getting there easy and well worth the visit. Fly directly into Auckland and enjoy the leisurely 4.5 hour drive via the Geothermal hot spot, Rotorua, or fly into Wellington and the drive is just 4 hours. Whatever the standard of accommodation you are after you will find it in each of the small towns situated in and around Tongariro National park. Ohakune is the Apres Ski capital of the North Island located just 20 minutes from Turoa, while Whakapapa village offers a little less action and is just 6 mins from Whakapapa Ski area. Taupo is a colourful town located only 1 hr from Mt Ruapehu and boasts its own range of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It is also a great place to go shopping, strolling or taking in the local arts & crafts. Turangi is located on the opposite side of the magnificent Lake Taupo, 45 minutes from Whakapapa and is renown for its natural thermal pools.
